Activate a New Mobile Phone

Learn how to activate your new mobile phone.

Overview:

  1. Activate your line with Verizon.

  2. Set up your iPhone with Cal Poly credentials.

  3. Verify functionality and install required apps.

Before activating your new iPhone:

  • Go to the ITS Service Desk to pick up your new phone between 8:30 AM and 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday.

  • If needed, request a tech support appointment through the ticket for help activating the new phone.

  • Make sure you are in a location with strong cell service.

  • Activating your new phone will deactivate your old phone.

  • iPhones that have been turned into departments by previous users may not be available for re-activation due to Apple's Activation Lock.

  • If the previous user does not sign out of iCloud and you need to unlock the Activation Lock, it takes 10 business days to get the device unlocked by Apple. You will need proof of purchase including the phone's serial number (found in the device's Settings[your name] >[the phone's name] > Serial Number), receipt, and a copy of the back of the box from the phone's original packaging. If you do not have a copy of the receipt, your department Telephone Coordinator will need to submit a New Mobile Phone or Service Change request.

iPhone

  1. Call Verizon at 1-877-807-4646 from a separate line.

  2. Enter in the phone number when prompted.

    • For iPhone upgrades only: Follow the directions to authenticate. A code will be sent to the old phone by text message. This may take up 2-3 minutes, so wait on the line for the text message to come through.

  3. Hang up once Verizon confirms the activation request is successful.

    • For iPhone upgrades only: Turn off old phone.

  4. Turn on the new phone and follow the onscreen instructions to set up your iPhone.

  11. Once finished with the initial setup, the Jamf Setup app will automatically install and open. Select your department, then tap Submit. Swipe up to close the Jamf setup app.
